There’s a certain stigma that goes along with having dandruff. It’s embarrassing, which is strange because so many people have dandruff. For all of these people, finding the best anti-dandruff shampoo is incredibly important.
That’s why we’ve created this article – to list the best anti-dandruff shampoo for men that are suffering from this unfortunate and unwanted condition.
Before we get into that though, we are going to take a quick look at what causes dandruff, as well as considering what we should be looking for in an anti-dandruff shampoo. Let’s get into it.
Dandruff – What causes it?
It’s estimated that half of the population struggle with dandruff. It’s a very common skin condition, which isn’t caused by poor hygiene or anything else that you should be embarrassed about. You can have impeccable hair hygiene and still have dandruff.
The most common cause of dandruff is having oily skin or having very dry skin. It is more common in men than it is in women, and it can start in young adulthood and carry on right through until old age.
Other, less common, causes of dandruff include a yeastlike fungus called Malassezia, other skin conditions such as Eczema and Psoriasis, as well as a sensitivity to certain hair products.
Whatever is causing your dandruff, the good news is that it is usually fairly easy to cure. By using an anti-dandruff shampoo regularly for around a month, you will find that you can get it under control. If this doesn’t work, you can go to the doctors to get some medicated anti-dandruff shampoo, but try an over-the-counter one first.
Which anti-dandruff shampoo should you choose? That’s what we’re going to answer below.
What to look for in an Anti-Dandruff Shampoo
Before we get on to the specific anti dandruff shampoos that we recommend using, let’s just have a quick run through of what you should be looking out for.
According to the NHS, there are certain ingredients that you should make sure your anti dandruff contains. Make sure it has one of the following: zinc pyrithione, salicylic acid, selenium sulphide (or selenium sulfide), ketoconazole or coal tar.
On top of this, we would add Tea tree oil, a natural remedy.
Whatever shampoo you choose, we would recommend that you avoid parabens and sulphates – even after you have your dandruff under control. These tend to be harsh ingredients that can have a negative impact on your scalp.
Top 7 Anti Dandruff Shampoos For Men
Right, now that we have all of the above settled, let’s take a look at the best anti dandruff shampoos for men.
Alpecin Dandruff Killer
If you have a medical condition, you go to a doctor, right? Well, then what better company to go listen to help cure your dandruff than Alpecin – a family-run German business that was created by Doctors Wolff and C Bruck. They invented “the first cosmeceutical hair and scalp tonic nearly 100 years ago – it is safe to assume that they know what they are talking about on this subject.
In order to get the best results, you should be using this on a daily basis, in place of your usual shampoo. The “powerful anti-dandruff complex” will not only remove the existing dandruff from your hair but also restore your scalp to a natural balance, whether you were suffering from a scalp that was too oily or too dry. This will help to prevent the dandruff returning.
This is a really powerful anti-dandruff shampoo. It needs just a couple of minutes a day to really attack the dandruff and treat your scalp, and you’ll notice an improvement within a week or two.
It’s around the sort of price range that you should expect to pay for a decent anti dandruff shampoo – not the most expensive on our list by a long way. It’s a brand with a reputation that has been built over more than a century of producing great products, so this is a fine place to start our list of the best anti dandruff shampoos for men.back to menu ↑
Toni&Guy Men Anti-Dandruff 2 in 1 Shampoo
Next up we have this 2 in 1 shampoo from Toni&Guy – one of the most recognisable names on UK high streets and beyond. They have a long history of making us look the best we can – this anti-dandruff shampoo is designed to provide you with the base from which you can perfect your look.
If the Alpecin product above was created to be a powerful, no-nonsense shampoo to rid your hair of dandruff, this takes a gentler approach. This shampoo is just as much about your hair as it is your scalp – which is where the second part of the ‘2 in 1’ comes from.
Your scalp does get some attention, of course. The zinc pyrithione present in the ingredients will help to soothe and clear your scalp, but that’s just the start. Your hair gets the treatment too, as the mineral extracts work to clean your hair leaving it with a healthy shine.
In terms of price, this is another that is in the mid-range, so there is nothing to concern you from that point of view. If you want a great platform from which you can style your hair, while remaining dandruff free, then this could be the shampoo for you.back to menu ↑
Schwarzkopf 3D Men
Another household name now, as we look at this anti-dandruff shampoo from Schwarzkopf – the second German company on our list so far. They were also founded by a medical man – chemist and pharmacist Hans Schwarzkopf created the brand in his Berlin ‘dye, drug and perfume’ store in 1898. Today, they are one of the biggest hair care product producers in the world.
Their 3D range is vast, with three shampoos and three styling products, but it is their anti-dandruff shampoo that we are interested in here. The 3D aspect refers to the ‘Tricho-System’ that addresses the key challenges that men face every day with their hair, namely: hair strength, scalp condition, and root health.
The main anti-dandruff ingredient is zinc pyrithione again. This is designed to soothe the scalp to reduce discomfort and redness. The dandruff is cleared away, and prevention is ensured – what more could you want?
Well, if you were being greedy, I guess you could ask for some root activation in there as well. Schwarzkopf have you covered there too.
This is one of the more expensive products on our list so far, but it works very well and goes that extra mile to ensure the health of your hair, so it is well worth considering if it is in your budget.back to menu ↑
Organic Forest Anti-Dandruff Shampoo
While this is a list of best anti-dandruff shampoos for men, we have included here a shampoo that is aimed at both men and women. A great option if you have a partner that tends to use your products!
This is from The Organic Forest – a company that specialises in ‘natural wellness products’ – an attempt to harness the good in nature, to provide us with better health with minimal impact on the planet. A noble cause I’m sure you will agree.
That wouldn’t be relevant if the shampoo wasn’t very good – so I am delighted to write that this shampoo is truly here on merit. It employs the natural remedy tea tree oil to help to soothe and repair your scalp, as well as rosemary to help clear the flakes, oat protein to add strength to your hair and apple cider vinegar to help restore the pH balance of your scalp.
What we like most about this shampoo is that it is completely natural, and therefore very gentle on your skin and hair. It even helps with thinning and damaged hair.
They promise dandruff relief in just 14 days, and that certainly was our experience. You’ll notice an improvement to how your scalp feels even sooner than that.
You can probably see this coming, but this is one of the more expensive anti-dandruff shampoos on our list today. Its performance is fantastic, though, and we love the all-natural aspect of it too. Definitely one for you to consider.back to menu ↑
Bulldog Anti-Dandruff Shampoo
Next up we are going to look at the most inexpensive product on our list – this anti-dandruff hair & scalp shampoo from Bulldog. These guys are a UK producer of skin and hair care products for men. They have a focus on cruelty free processes, and all of their products are suitable for vegans.
This is a great, basic anti-dandruff shampoo. It does what it is supposed to do with little fuss. I love the fact that it uses only natural ingredients and has deployed the lesser-spotted jujube bark to provide natural dandruff relief. I have to be honest here – I had never heard of jujube bark before I tried this shampoo, so I was a little sceptical.
I was very impressed, though. It left my hair clear of dandruff within a few weeks, and my hair was soft to touch. I used it every day to begin with, but now I use it every other day, and use a regular shampoo on the other days. I haven’t seen my dandruff return.
So as one of the cheapest products around, I can wholeheartedly recommend this shampoo. It will do the job you want it to do. Perhaps, if you would rather use a more expensive one initially, you could get this in for long-term use to prevent dandruff from returning. At this price, you would be silly not to.back to menu ↑
Alpecin Double Effect
Back to where we began this list of anti-dandruff shampoos – Germany and Alpecin. The original male shampoo company.
As you would expect, this is quite similar to their product that we reviewed above. The two anti-dandruff substances in the ingredients (salicylic acid and piroctone olamine) work to keep your scalp soothed and clear of dandruff. You will stop experiencing scalp itch, and your dandruff will be gone before you know it.
That’s only the half of it though. Alpecin have made a name for themselves in the hair growth corner of the male shampoo market. They have long used caffeine in their products as a way to stimulate growth, and they have incorporated it again here with this anti-dandruff shampoo.
The caffeine works with niacin and our old buddy zinc to help encourage healthy hair roots – this has been demonstrated over many years of scientific research to help with hair loss.
Now, I am fortunate enough to not suffer from hair loss, but we have included this on our list to illustrate that you don’t have to make the choice between hair grown and anti-dandruff shampoos – you can have both in one with this great shampoo from Alpecin.
The price shouldn’t put you off either, as it is pretty much in the middle of the products that we have looked at so far. If this will help you with two issues that you are struggling from, then this has to be the shampoo for you.back to menu ↑
Lincoln Charcoal Shampoo for Men
What is it with Germany and great shampoo? We complete our list of the best anti-dandruff shampoos for men with this charcoal shampoo from Lincoln – a men’s hair specialist company based in Hamburg.
So, why charcoal? Well, Lincoln believe charcoal to be a bit of a miracle worker when it comes to hair care. Not only will it combat an itchy and flaky scalp, while moisturising it, but it will also stimulate hair growth and restore healthy hair while maintaining a healthy pH level.
For good measure, they have also included caffeine, basil extract, vitamin E, green tea extract, aloe vera and birch extract to create this fantastic, and natural, shampoo that does far more than just prevent dandruff.
You’ll find that your hair is a bit thicker, cleaner, healthier, shinier and softer when you use this shampoo. It’s great if you are struggling with hair loss, but it is also great if you aren’t. The detoxifying agents within this shampoo work wonders.
This is one of the more expensive products on our list today, but we feel it is well worth the extra cost if you can afford it. This is a premium shampoo, so it is no surprise that it is priced as such. To be honest, we think you will struggle to find a better one, no matter what your budget is.
Dandruff is a frustrating and embarrassing problem for anyone to have. But the thing is, it’s also a completely unnecessary problem to have, because it is one that is pretty easy to fix.
By using any of the shampoos that we have listed above, even just for a few weeks, you should start to see the problem go away. You don’t need to make major lifestyle changes; you don’t need to spend a load of money and you don’t need to really think about it ever again. Just use one of these shampoos in place of your regular one, and that should be that.
Don’t let it worry you anymore. Dandruff can be a thing of the past in a few short weeks.
