Braun Series 5 50-B1200s Electric Shaver Review
When you are looking for a new hair or grooming product, you will inevitably come across a product from Braun. Today we’ll be looking at a mid range model in this Braun Series 5 review.
Since they were founded in 1921, they have established themselves as one of the finest electronic goods producers on the planet. In the 1980’s they became a subsidiary of Gillette, and since then their name has become synonymous with hair and beauty products, and today that is the primary function of the company.
So I think it is fair to say that they have built up an incredibly strong reputation in the industry. It goes without saying, then, that we were quite excited about the prospect of reviewing one of their recent electric shaver releases – the catchily named Series 5 50-B1200s…
In this article we are going to take a detailed look at the Series 5 electric razor – first looking at what is included in the box when you purchase one and what features and specifications it possesses. Then we will put it to the test and report on how it performs, before looking at the pros and cons and some alternatives, and finally delivering our final verdict.
A lot to get through, so let’s get stuck in!
Braun Series 5 First Impressions
- 1x Series 5 razor for men – Mint
- 1x Beard trimmer attachment
- 1x Charging stand
- 1x Protective cap
- 1x Smart plug for automatic 100-240 voltage adjustment
- 1x Cleaning brush
This is compatible with the Braun EasyClick, which means you can easily buy other attachments to fit on, to get more out of your shaver.
Features/Specs Of The Braun Series 5
Before we get into what the Braun Series 5 Electric Shaver can do, let’s take a minute to discuss what it looks like. Personally, I really like the slim design – it is simple with an understated black body, but with a flash of colour (Mint). I think this really makes it stand out, and it looks very stylish.
Now on to the specifications. The razor has 3 flexible blades on it, which all move in line with the contours of your face and neck. The idea behind this is that it gives you the closest possible shave, without compromising on speed.
The Li-Ion battery promises 50 minutes of shaving when it is fully charged, which only takes around an hour to do. It also has a great little feature where you can charge it for just 5 minutes to give you enough power for a shave – you are always only ever five minutes away from having enough charge to shave, which is great if you’re like me and you often forget to charge things up.
It is 100% waterproof, so it can be used directly in the shower as well as with foam or gel. This gives you plenty of options when it comes to shaving, and flexibility for people with sensitive skin that might need foam or gel to prevent rashes.
Finally, there is the EasyClean system which means you just need to run water over the head of the shaver in order to give it a thorough clean. Unlike many other options, you don’t need to remove the head at all to clean it.
Using The Braun Series 5
When I put the Braun Series 5 to the test, this is what I discovered:
It needed a charge straight out of the box, which is completely understandable, but because I am an impatient little child at heart, I was a little disappointed. I didn’t need to be though – I plugged it in and five minutes later I was good to go.
I decided to use it with a little foam to begin with. I have quite sensitive skin, so I tend to err on the side of caution, particularly when using a new shaver. When I got started, I was amazed at how smooth a shave it was. There was no ‘pulling’ at the hairs or my skin, it would just glide across. It was actually quite a pleasant feeling.
The shave was really good as well. Obviously, compared to a wet shave with a blade, you are never going to get as close with an electric shaver, but I was really impressed with the results using the Series 5. Apparently, there are 10,000 vibrations with every stroke, which probably helped make it so comfortable to use.
The EasyClean feature worked really well, even with the foam around the head of the shaver, which was a relief.
A couple of days later I decided to use it in the shower. I often shave in the shower as I like to kid myself that it saves time, but it probably just makes my showers longer! Anyway, it again performed really well and I found that it did not irritate my skin, even without any foam this time.
The handle is very comfortable to use, and I haven’t yet had to recharge the battery after I charged it fully after that first use. It’s been nearly two weeks now, and I tend to shave every other day.
Pros and Cons
- Smooth shave: This genuinely produced one of the smoothest shaves I’ve ever had from an electric razor
- Great battery life: One full charge will last you a decent amount of time, and the quick charge from an empty battery means that you are never more than 5 minutes away from being able to shave
- Easy to clean: It really was an absolute breeze to clean – just rinse it under a tap
- Expensive: This is towards the top end of what you can expect to pay for an electric shaver – it’s always a good idea to look out for offers and jump on one if you see a good price
- No travel case: It would have been nice to have a case to aid travelling. As it is, you run the risk of it going off in your suitcase, which isn’t ideal
Alternatives To The Braun Series 5
It is always good to consider other options when you are looking for a product like this, so here a few that we have found that might be worth your consideration:
- Panasonic ES-LV97 Wet and Dry Rechargeable 5-Blade Electric Shaver – Top Rated
- Remington F4 Style Series Electric Shaver – The Budget Option
- Hatteker All-in-one trimmer – The All-in-One
The Braun Series 5 50-B1200s Electric Shaver is a fantastic option if you are looking for a new electric shaver.
The performance of the Series 5 really does rank up there as one of the best electric shavers that I have ever used – it gets really close to your skin, but it does not irritate. The result is that you are left with a smooth shave, with healthy-looking skin.
It is easy to clean, and it is quite versatile – although you may need to purchase other attachments to really utilise this. The fact that this is made by one of the most reliable companies in the world just adds to the confidence you can have in this shaver.
All of this comes at a price, of course. This is certainly one of the more expensive electric shavers that are available, but the performance really does justify the cost. If you regularly use an electric shaver, this one should certainly be on your shortlist.
