Whenever you’re in the market for a new manscaping tool there are so many things to think about – Will it give me smooth results? Will it irritate my skin?  How many attachments does it come with? And that’s just a few questions, making it a difficult task to find just the right one for you.

So how do you decide on the best manscaping tool for your needs? That’s where we at Bald Beards come in. Luckily, I got the opportunity to review the Manscaped Lawnmower 4.0 which I was excited about – I’d heard a lot of good things about the brand, and I really hoped it would live up to its growing reputation.

Having been around since 2016 the male grooming company are still relatively new, but in that short space of time they have formed a huge fan base, and this is the fourth generation trimmer of its kind. Having made improvements and adaptions since the previous models, let’s take you through the Lawnmower 4.0’s best bits, the pros and cons, as well as putting it through its paces and finding out whether it is worth all the hype. I’ll give you my honest review on what it was like to try out the latest piece of kit from Manscaped.

First Impressions Of The Lawnmower 4.0

Upon receiving the trimmer, I liked it instantly. The packaging was what I was expecting after reading about the brand. A sleek looking box that held a very important gadget. But that’s enough of the outside, it’s what was on the inside that I was really interested in. I wasn’t disappointed – the look, the shape, the feel – so far so good. Just holding it in my hand felt like it would get the job done and whilst it wasn’t too heavy, I was already confident that it was capable of tackling anything it came up against! This is definitely a piece of kit I’d happily have on my list of male grooming products.

The Lawnmower 4.0 Specs & Features

Firstly, let’s talk about the look of the Lawnmower 4.0 – the design and shape are perfect for being able to hold it steady in your hand (and we all know how important a steady hand is when you’re anywhere close to the crown jewels with a blade!).

The sleek, black model gives it a modern look and it certainly won’t be out of place on the bathroom shelf when not in use. But you won’t be expected to just leave it lying around, Manscaped have thought of everything which means you get a charging dock that will hold the trimmer upright when not in use – perfect for a minimalist look in any home.

Thanks to the charging dock, you will see that the trimmer is wireless – this really does help when you are trying to navigate around your nether regions. It can be difficult enough so the fact that you don’t have any wires to contend with is a huge bonus. From a 5 hour full charge you will get 90 minutes of usage time. There is a handy light which lets you know when it is fully charged as well as showing you how long you have left until it needs recharging.

Along with the trimmer you get 2 adjustable guards which means you can trim down to different lengths on your body depending on your preference or experience. With the guard on, you can go down to as little as 3mm, but if you are feeling brave you can use the Lawnmower 4.0 without the guard.

Whether you choose to operate the trimmer with or without a guard you can rest assured that your skin will be looked after. This is thanks to its Skinsafe technology. Although you do have to replace the blades, which you purchase separately, I appreciated this. As a man that suffers with skin irritation from shaving, I always put these factors at the top of my list when purchasing any kind of razor, shaver, or trimmer. The rust-proof ceramic snap in blades will keep irritation and redness at bay.

The blades are easy enough to replace – (just make sure the trimmer is turned off and unplugged first) push the blade forward with your thumb and apply enough pressure for it to snap off, and then making sure you have the blade facing up slot in a new one and push down to click it into place. It is recommended to change your blade every few months, but this will depend on how much use you get out of it. You’ll know when it is time because the blade won’t trim the hairs as easily as when you first used it and you may even get some tugs and pulls, so just bear that in mind.

It’s also worth mentioning that because you can have multiple blades, you may want to use this trimmer for other areas too such as your chest or back. Although it is predominantly for the groin area, reviews suggest that quite a few owners use it on these other areas too.

Other features include a QuietStroke motor, meaning it shouldn’t be too noisy while you’re trimming – trimmers and shavers have come a long since they first came about and most are not particularly noisy anyway, but the extra quiet motor in the Lawnmower 4.0 just means you won’t be easily distracted by the noise.

Its waterproof technology gives you the added benefit of being able to shave in the shower – ideal for washing away any hairs on your body as you go. This will also make for easier cleaning. As you trim you can avoid any clogging of hairs amongst the blades and if you do dry shave then you can simply wash it under the water to get the same clean results.

You also get a handy light which sits just below the blade on the front of the device. This is a great function that enables you to see even the lightest hairs for an even and smooth trim. It can be a little awkward to see down below which does risk you nicking or cutting yourself, so this is definitely one of my favourite features. There is also a travel lock feature which means it won’t get switched on while in your bag or on the move – to activate this press the power button three times and it will lock, use the same process to deactivate.

The cleaning brush provided will allow you to easily maintain your trimmer. Brushing off any hairs after each use will preserve the device, making sure it works to its full capacity. You also get an instruction manual explaining everything you need to get up and running.

Using The Lawnmower 4.0

Upon opening the trimmer, I thought it best to place it on charge to begin with. It didn’t take long to reach a full charge but if you run it down completely, it is worth noting that you will have to charge it for 5 hours, at which point you will get 90 minutes of usage time. This is a good amount and should be more than enough to get the desired results of a bit of manscaping, even if you’re a beginner and taking your time. Similarly, if you’re going away and don’t want to take too many wires or chargers with you, a full charge would give you plenty of power to be able to take care of the important things while you’re having a break away.

While charging, the LED light will flash and as soon as it’s got a completely full charge you will get a solid light, so it is easy to know when you are at maximum power.

And so I began! I used the 3mm guard to begin with, even though I’ve used trimmers for my more intimate areas before, I wanted to go for the safer route in the first instance. I pressed the button on the front of the device and found it surprisingly quiet. I opted for a dry trim and the use of the light really helped to get to the places I’d normally miss.

The light should automatically come on when you power up the trimmer, if it doesn’t though, you simply press and hold the power button until it lights up. You can also turn it off using the same method.

If it is your first time using a trimmer for your below the waist region, we’d recommend using a longer cutting guard and then when you’ve built up confidence with the trimming process you can find a length that suits you. If you prefer it really short, then you can trim without the use of a guard giving you a closer shave with just the blades.

I proceeded cautiously and slowly to avoid nicking myself – as I would with any new razor or trimmer, and I found the whole experience quite pleasant. I was a little nervous about the area around my balls, but I needn’t have been. Thanks to the use of the guard and not rushing the process, I was able to have a clean and even trim.

The Lawnmower 4.0 was easy to hold and thanks to its shape and being quite lightweight, it fit really well in my hand and I could move it around my body with ease. I had a good grip of it while I was trimming which is extremely important when a blade is so close to such a sensitive area!

Following on from this part going as well as I could have hoped, I decided to take the plunge and got rid of the guard. I had already trimmed the groin area as much as I could with the guard on and so decided I would see how the blade faired on my pubic hairs – now considering this is just a trimmer and not a shaver, it did quite well. It was a really close cut and felt so much more comfortable. This could easily be my new best friend during the warmer months.

After reading up on how to take care of the more sensitive areas of my body, I then went on to moisturise my freshly trimmed nether region and felt happy that the Lawnmower 4.0 had been a success.

I will admit I had to make sure that my fingers didn’t press too hard on the power button – something I am always mindful of when it is placed at the front. There’s nothing worse than the trimmer powering off at that pivotal moment, all while trying to keep your hand steady.

I brushed the excess hairs off using the cleaning tool, which didn’t take long, and I then placed it back onto the charging dock on my bathroom shelf. It really hadn’t used much charge at all. The great thing about the charging dock too is that it will tell you when it is fully charged so you do not over charge it because believe it or not, this could also damage the trimmer.

The whole design of both the trimmer and the charging dock looked right at home in my bathroom, and even if I was to keep it in the bedroom, the sleek setup would not look out of place.

Pros & Cons Of The Lawnmower 4.0

Verdict

The Lawnmower 4.0 gave me a great trim. The overall look and feel gave me confidence to use it and I was really pleased with the results. Like many trimmers there isn’t much scope to move the position of the power button, but you get used to this the more you handle it and its simple to operate and comfortable to hold.

If you don’t like the idea of shelling out for new blades every few months then this trimmer might not be the one for you, but if you are anything like me and want the reassurance that your skin will remain smooth and not irritated then you can’t go wrong with the Manscaped Lawnmower 4.

The price of the trimmer isn’t too bad for what you get. If you don’t need too many bells and whistles and just simply want a trimmer that will leave your balls and groin area feeling smooth and hygienic then this is a great addition to your arsenal. Of course, you can get other products that may be similar for a cheaper price, but that also comes with the risk of not being able to trim your hairs adequately and may leave you with sensitive, red and blotchy skin.

Manscaped have made a decent gadget here and you’d do well to find anything close to their range for such a decent price. With soft ceramic blades, quiet technology and a wireless device, the Lawnmower 4.0 is a contender for anyone in the market for a below the waist trimmer.
